Quick answer
How do you convert a gross salary to net in France?
In France, subtract employee social contributions from the gross salary: about 22% for a non-executive employee (net ≈ gross × 0.78) and 25% for an executive, or "cadre" (net ≈ gross × 0.75). Example: €2,500 gross per month gives roughly €1,950 net for a non-executive and €1,875 for a cadre, before income tax withheld at source. These rates are average estimates.
| Monthly gross | Net non-executive (22%) | Net cadre (25%) |
|---|---|---|
| €1,800 | €1,404 | €1,350 |
| €2,000 | €1,560 | €1,500 |
| €2,500 | €1,950 | €1,875 |
| €3,000 | €2,340 | €2,250 |
| €4,000 | €3,120 | €3,000 |
| €5,000 | €3,900 | €3,750 |
About the Gross to Net Salary (France)
What is it?
This calculator estimates a French net salary from the gross amount (or the reverse) by applying an average employee contribution rate based on your status. It shows hourly, monthly and annual figures, before and after French withholding tax (prélèvement à la source).
Why use it?
French job offers and contracts usually quote a gross salary, while the net amount is what lands in your bank account. Knowing the difference quickly helps you compare offers, negotiate or plan your budget. Employee social contributions (social security, basic and supplementary pension, CSG, CRDS and, depending on the case, unemployment insurance) take a significant share of gross pay.
How does it work?
The tool uses indicative average rates: about 22% for non-executive employees, 25% for executives (cadres), 15% for the civil service, 45% for self-employed or liberal professions and 51% for portage salarial. Formula: Net = Gross × (1 - rate) and Gross = Net ÷ (1 - rate). Hourly figures use 151.67 hours per month (35-hour week) and annual figures use 12 or 13 months. Net after tax = Net × (1 - withholding rate).
Usage tips
- Executives (cadres) pay slightly higher contributions than non-executives, mainly for supplementary pension and provident schemes
- The rates are averages: your payslip can differ by a few points depending on health insurance and collective agreement
- Your personal withholding tax rate is shown on your payslip and in your account on impots.gouv.fr
- Withholding tax is actually applied to taxable net salary, slightly higher than net pay, so the net after tax shown is an approximation
- If an offer is quoted as an annual gross over 13 months, select the 13-month option to get the right monthly amount
