4. Read each person's share and share the link with your friends

Quick answer

How do you split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the total, then divide by the number of people: share = total × (1 + tip ÷ 100) ÷ people, rounded up to the next cent. Example: a €120 bill with a 10% tip comes to €132, so €33 each for 4 people. If everyone pays for what they ordered, apply the tip to each person's amount instead.

PeopleShare of €132 (€120 + 10%)
2€66.00
3€44.00
4€33.00
5€26.40
6€22.00
8€16.50

About the Bill splitter

What is it?

This bill splitter works out what each diner owes at a restaurant, tip included. You can divide the bill equally or have everyone pay for what they ordered, with shared dishes split fairly between the group.

Why use it?

No more rough mental maths at the end of a meal or missing coins. The tool shows the tip, the total and each person's exact share, and rounding up to the next euro makes paying in cash easier. The share link lets you send the calculation to the whole group.

How does it work?

Equal split: tip = bill × rate / 100, total = bill + tip, share = total / number of people (rounded up to the cent so the bill is covered). Itemized mode: a person's subtotal = their order + shared items / number of people, then the same tip rate is applied to that subtotal, so the tip is split in proportion to what each person had.

Usage tips

  • In France, service is included in menu prices by law ("service compris"): tipping is optional, a way to thank staff for good service.
  • In Spain, leaving a small tip is common but optional, often by rounding up the bill or leaving a few coins.
  • In the United States, a 15-20% tip is customary in restaurants, as tips make up a large part of staff income.
  • Use rounding to the next euro when paying in cash: the extra shown can go to the tip or a group kitty.
  • Enter shared bottles and starters as "shared items" so they are divided fairly between everyone.
